Melissa Hopp and Joyln Bauer Endowed Scholarship

Benjamin and Lanette Young are long-time supporters of the Community College of Baltimore County. In 2013, the couple established the Melissa Hopp and Joyln Bauer Endowed Scholarship to honor their close friend and colleague. Benjamin came from a family of meager means and was the second of nine children, born in Landis, North Carolina. Lanette came from a more affluent family and was the oldest of two children, born in Peru, Nebraska. She was expected to attend college. He was the first in his family to attend college and attain a degree. Lanette learned to give back at an early age. Ben never saw that modeled in his home. But regardless of their differing backgrounds, together, they agreed—philanthropy was important to them. Ben and Lanette created and funded seven endowments in the various communities where they have worked and lived. They wanted to do something while they were still alive that would outlast their time here on earth. Sadly, Lanette passed away in December 2019. One of their funds is at the Community College of Baltimore County Foundation, honoring their long-time friends Melissa Hopp and Joyln Bauer.
